Anthony Schrag
What Lies (Beneath Cupar)?
Anthony Schrag’s ‘What Lies (Beneath Cupar)?’ explores the mysterious Lady Burn that appears and disappears beneath the town. Inspired by underground waters and the mythic place they occupy in human psychology, his work addresses questions such as: “Who was the Lady, and what happened to her? What beasts hide in those dark, liminal underworlds?” As a research-based exploration of these questions, Anthony’s work will develop into a public and participatory project during Cupar Arts Festival. He will be working with a number of groups in the community prior to the event including students at Fife College and pupils from the town’s primary school.
Anthony was born in Zimbabwe, grew up in the Middle East, the UK, and Canada, and is currently based in Scotland. Last year, he was commissioned to walk 2500 km from Huntly, Scotland to the Venice Biennale. Anthony returns to Cupar after presenting ‘Pigheaded Cupar Justice’ in 2013.
Anthony’s artwork is part interactive tour, part performance and part film, and there are two opportunities to take part in this event:
Saturday, June 18 at 10.30am

Meet at the Festival Hub on both occasions. Participation is free and no booking is required.
