Inside

One time Champion body builder, Michele Caira became a student of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee University, graduating in 2009. He enrolled on The Master of Fine Art Programme at the same university the following year but failed to complete the course when he was arrested and imprisoned. He is now serving an eight-year sentence at HMP Glenochil, Clackmannanshire.

Michele was commissioned by the Prison Governor to create two large-scale (16’x4) paintings for the prison walls. Using recorded interviews; film and still photography of Michele, and individuals in the prison system who encouraged him, Carolyn Scott and filmmaker Andy Sim created an installation exploring how this unusual situation evolved. The prison authorities kindly agreed to loan the paintings to be included in the artwork Inside for the Cupar Arts Festival. The installation was shown in the town’s former jail cells. This was a final opportunity for festival visitors to see inside this historic building and they were demolished shortly afterwards.
